We could have beaten a Mercedes with different strategy – Stroll | RaceFans Round-up
In the round-up: Lance Stroll says he could have beaten Valtteri Bottas to the final podium place in the Hungarian Grand Prix.
What they say
Stroll qualified third but finished the race fourth behind Bottas:
There’s a lot to review. Maybe we could have made a couple of different strategy calls, pitted a lap earlier at the beginning of the race to switch from the inters to the dry tyres. But it was such a gamble. So I’ve got to review the race, there’s a lot that happened, so I’m not really sure.
But we missed a couple of opportunities. I think the podium was possible today. I think more with Bottas at the end because he managed to pit, we were expecting rain again so we are trying to stay out longer and he pitted and undercut us. So that was a bit unfortunate.
I think we definitely had the pace to hold him off for the podium. But these things happen. It’s racing, we’re got to be happy with fourth.
Mattia Binotto: “An extremely disappointing Sunday and the result is very hard to swallow. In qualifying, we had got the most out of the car as it is at the moment, but in the race that was not the case. To be lapped is very painful for us and our fans.”
George Russell: “Our race pace was really poor, we just need to understand what is going on. Last year it was the opposite, our race pace was better than the qualifying pace. Now we are pretty fast on the Saturday and struggle a lot on the Sunday.”
Daniil Kvyat: “After the pit stops I ended up behind cars I had already overtaken on the first laps. I need to review the race to understand it better, because I felt there was a chance of finishing in the points today and to end up only P12 is not really satisfying.”
Sergio Perez: “I had a few adventures out there too and I ran wide – in the dry – and was lucky not to touch the wall. When I did get some clean air, I could show the pace of the car, but the time I lost on lap one was costly.”
